Review: Minnesota Hemp Derived THC Seltzers

Updated: Feb 23, 2023

Oh Minnesota; the state that is known to be "passive aggressive;" We take that to the fullest extent- especially with marijuana. As of July 1, 2022, "Hemp Derived," edibles, UP TO 50mg per package, No More Than < 5mg per piece, are LEGAL in Minnesota. Even without having a Recreational Marijuana program. (And our Medical program's edibles choices are somewhat of a "joke"). This has opened the door in the Minnesota market for more than your common gummy snack; We have chocolates, and dessert bars, and even THC infused Seltzers.

I got the opportunity to attend a THC Seltzer tasting at Black Hart Bar, on University Ave in Saint Paul, MN. I am not the biggest alcohol drinker, and pride myself as a Pothead, but I really enjoyed being able to try another option for a night out, that will be available across the Twin Cities very soon. I came to realize that I, personally, feel like a "Champagne" buzz from THC Seltzers. I am also a patient who needs around 300mg of THC in an edible to feel "high," so I was pleasantly surprised I felt any type of buzz. Below, I take into consideration flavor, and the cannabinoids that are used in the making of that seltzer. Some use cannabinoids to their benefit, others don't.

Here are my reviews of the Top Five THC Seltzers, I've tried, available currently in Minnesota.

Trail Magic, "Berry Basil"

12oz/ 3mg THC

Minneapolis Cider Company

Minneapolis, MN

This was the first seltzer offered at the tasting; First impression, you could smell the basil and the berry flavor (apples, blueberries, and strawberries) as first whiff of the glass. Secondly, it was refreshing. It was not "gulp down," refreshing, but, it didn't taste like it was pumped with artificial flavoring. My table felt like the 3mg of THC serving was a bit mild, but again, this is Minnesota.

Flavor Score: 5/10

Cannabinoid Score: 3/10

Overall Score: 4/10

CANN Social Tonic "Various Flavors"

8oz/ 2mg THC & 4mg CBD

CANN Cannabis-Infused Social Tonic

Oakland, California

CANN Social Tonic offers three flavors, which was super appealing. All three were delicious! They're only an 8oz serving, but within that serving you're getting 2mg of THC, and 4mg of CBD. I enjoy any product that attempts to use the entourage effect to their benefit. Flavors were; Blood Orange Cardamom, Lemon Lavender, and Grapefruit Rosemary. Only Complaint?

The Grapefruit Rosemary flavor did not have a pleasant aftertaste.

Flavor Score: 7/10

Blood Orange Cardamom- 8/10

Lemon Lavender - 8/10

Grapefruit Rosemary- 4/10

Cannabinoid Score: 6/10

Overall Score: 6.5/10

Chill State Hemp Infused Sparkling Water

16oz/ 5mg THC and 25mg CBD

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

Minneapolis, MN

Fair State Brewing Cooperative provided our sampling with their "hemp-infused sparkling water," Chill State. It was also the only "non" flavored of the group of THC Seltzers we tried. I appreciated that; I wouldn't say I enjoyed the "natural" flavor, but I liked the no added flavor, as an option for the market. Another unique characteristic of this seltzer, is that the can lists the Hemp strain terpenes it was created with. For this brew, it was Grapefruit Kush, and King Louie. Two recognizable, and "classic," strains any cannabis smoker would be familiar with. Chill State was very earthy in taste, and provided a total of 30mg of Cannabinoids; 5mg of Hemp Derived THC, and 25mg of CBD.

Flavor Score: 2/10

Cannabinoid Score: 8/10

Overall Score: 5/10

BLNCD Cannabis Infused Sparkling Water "Various Flavors"

12 oz/ 5mg THC

BLNCD Naturals

Big Watt Cold Beverage CO, Minneapolis, MN

I'll admit- This brand I had the HIGHEST hopes for (had to get one pun in there), especially with flavors like, (another) Blood Orange Cardamom, Strawberry Basil, and Yuzu Ginger, BUT, they disappointed me the most. I was not a fan. I also wish, for a company that has so many products on their website, with multiple cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, ect), which, I haven't seen in Minnesota, they let me down with the 5mg of THC in a 12oz serving. The flavors were not there, for me, very much like a La Croix (which I do not like), and someone at my tasting table, in reference to the "Strawberry Basil" flavor said, "Shit. Just shit." They have "Mineralized Ro Water," not sure what that is (and not going to google it, sorry), listed as an ingredient, along with using "extracts" instead of real fruit juice, and with that, my assumption is that those ingredient choices are what effects the flavor of this seltzer.

Flavor Score: 3/10

Blood Orange Cardamom: 2/10

Strawberry Basil: 3/10

Yuzu Ginger: 3/10

Cannabinoid Score: 5/10

Overall Score: 4/10

Cycling Frog, Wild Cherry THC Seltzer

12oz/ 5mg THC and 10mg CBD

Cycling Frog Artisan Extracts

North Fork Distribution, Seattle, WA.

I saved the best (in my opinion) for last. I could have drank an entire pack of these. The Wild Cherry Cycling Frog THC Seltzer, is full spectrum, 5mg THC, 10mg CBD, and made with Sour Cherry Juice concentrate. It's a well made, well put together craft THC Seltzer. It only bummed me out to discover it wasn't local, and a Minnesota crafted beverage, because as a Minnesotan, I wanted bragging rights. Very tasty.

Flavor Score: 8/10

Cannabinoid Score: 9/10

Overall Score: 8.5/10

Hope you have a fabulous weekend, and get to enjoy some of these THC Seltzers on the market for yourselves! Let me know what YOU try, and what you think; I'm always look for for recommendations, especially things with Cannabinoids! :)

Always follow the laws of your state before consuming cannabis products.

Thanks for reading!
